Success on the Potty

Kirsten started sitting on the toilet before and after her baths and today she had her first successful poop into the toilet. She was so excited that she wanted to pose for a picture "pushing" with her mother.

The Cheesecake Challenge and Smiley Hanna

A great video of Kirsten doing "push-ups"Spencer and I decided to start the 'Cheesecake challenge.' We set up an exercise challenge where we worked out the days the he and I will run and decided that we each have to do a certain amount of sit-ups and push-ups each day. Kirsten has had great fun doing sit-ups with us. She contorts her face and groans each time she tries -- I don't know what that says about how we do sit-ups, but we'll forget about that for now. Kirsten even insisted that we help Hanna do some sit-ups so that she could take part in the fun. She liked it about as much as I do. We call it the 'Cheesecake challenge' because if we do this through all of November then we are going to treat ourselves to dinner at a recently opened 'Cheesecake factory' just down the road from us. Or, as Spencer points out, if we fail to fulfill the challenge, we'll both look like cheesecakes at the end of November.

Hanna is a smiley girl -- even when she's wearing a boy's outfit.

Puerto Rico

Doing a Ph.D. has its perks. It would have been much more fun if Brooke could have been there. Here are a few pictures from my trip to the 2005 IEEE Medical Imaging Conference in Puerto Rico. The beach at the private island of the conference hotel was pretty spectacular. The water was clear green and very warm. It looked like a commercial for a cruise vacation.

On the way back to the airport we stopped and drove through a national rain forest. We didn't see any exotic animals, but the views were amazing and the vegetation was lush green.

Answering questions at my poster.

There was a 3.5 hour break between talks so Anuj (a friend from Duke who I roomed with) and I took a trip to the beach.

The view from our room.
